A sustainable meditation practice is built through repetition, not heroic sessions.

Many people postpone meditation because they imagine the practice requires a silent room, a long block of time, and a mind already capable of being calm. In reality, a practice begins when we repeatedly return—even briefly—to what is happening now.

Research on mindfulness is varied, and it does not support every promise made in popular culture. Official health guidance describes meditation as a family of mind-body practices and notes that evidence is still developing across different outcomes. At the same time, randomized studies suggest that brief daily practice can be useful, especially when it is repeated consistently. The lesson is modest but encouraging: duration is not the only measure of seriousness.

Start with a session small enough that resistance has little room to negotiate. Five minutes after morning coffee, before opening a laptop, or when returning home is enough to establish a clear cue. Sit in a position you do not have to endure. Feel the support beneath you, choose one anchor—breathing, sound, or physical contact—and notice when attention wanders. The return is not a correction after failure; it is the practice.

Consistency becomes easier when the environment carries part of the intention. Keeping a bench, cushion, or chair ready removes a decision. Practising at roughly the same transition in the day creates familiarity. On difficult days, reduce the session rather than abandoning it. One attentive minute keeps the relationship alive.

A five-minute beginning

Minute 1: feel the points of contact supporting the body.

Minutes 2–4: follow breathing without changing its rhythm.

Minute 5: notice the quality of attention, then choose one action to carry forward.

A lasting practice does not demand a perfect day. It gives an ordinary day one fully inhabited moment.
